Carlos was born on 28 January 1940 in Mexico City to the Lebanese parents, Julián Slim Haddad (Father) and Linda Helú Atta (Mother). He always wants to become a businessman and started learning from his father Mr. Julian Slim at a very young age. His father taught him about how to read financial statements and accounting, management and finance. Also, he learned about the importance of keeping accurate and systematic financial records.
When he was 11 years old, Slim invested his first government saving bond by which he understood the concept of interest. At the age of 12, Carlos made his first stock purchase of shares in the Mexican bank. Later, at a very young age of 15, he became the shareholder in a Mexico’s largest bank. In 17 years Slim gets 200 pesos a week in respect of working for his father’s company. Then after, completion of school Carlos went for further studies doing civil engineering at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, where he learned the concept of algebra and linear programming. In 1967, Carlos married to Soumaya Domit, she had a great interest in Philanthropic projects and working on a legal framework of organ donation. They both have six children and his 3 elder sons served in a key position in the company to expand the Slim’s empire. In 1999, Soumaya Domit died due to kidney disease, once went for a transplant, but she wanted one more at the time of her death.
Career in Business
In 1961 after graduating from college, he worked as a stock trader in Mexico. Working for 14 hours his profits reached up to $400,000. From his investment, he started the business of Stock brokerage. Then in the early 1970s, Slim chanced his luck in the construction business and other such as soft drink, real estate, bottling as well as mining industries. Later, his business expanded to other several industries.
Carlos entry into telecommunication business in the early 1990s. At that time he worked with South Bell Corporation and France Telecom. Having a great interest in this field acquired the very esteemed telecom company Telmex from the Mexican Government. He later expanded his telecommunication business by purchasing Techtel, ATL etc. Unfortunately at that phase of life he went through heart surgery.
In 2000, America Telecom was incorporated which took the cellular company outside Mexico with Brazillian ATL, Techtel in Argentina and others with Ecuador. On April 23, 2014, Carlos took over the largest phone carrier of Austria. That is Telekom Austria which has telecommunication in other countries also. Doing 10-year agreement, Slim became the first successful business attainment in Europe. He also earned many awards for his philanthropic efforts.
